A recording in, its text out

A small desktop app that turns a recording into text. Pick an MP3 or WAV file and a language, press Transcribe, and the text is saved beside the recording.

Your audio is sent to Google for recognition: read the privacy note before using it.

Source code
The Audio Transcriber window with an MP3 file chosen and English selected, the Transcribe button ready.

What it does

MP3 or WAV

MP3 is converted to WAV first, and you can keep the converted file.

Three languages

Spanish (es-ES), English (en-US) and French (fr-FR).

Progress

Shown while converting, transcribing and saving; the window stays responsive.

Clear errors

When the audio is unclear, or the recognition service cannot be reached.

Beside the recording

The text is saved as <name>_transcription.txt.

Run it

uv installs Python and the dependencies. MP3 input needs FFmpeg on PATH (pydub uses it for the conversion).

uv sync
uv run python transcriber_ui.py

Privacy

Your audio is sent to Google. Transcription uses the SpeechRecognition library's recognize_google, which uploads the recording to Google's free Web Speech API and gets the text back. Do not transcribe recordings you may not share with Google; there is no offline mode yet.

It stores the transcript beside the recording, and the converted WAV only if you ask; otherwise a temporary WAV is deleted when transcription succeeds.

This page stores only your light or dark choice, whether you hid the intro, and your answer to the notice, all on this device.
